Monitor spec sheets pack in numbers that don't all matter equally for every use. A monitor built for competitive gaming and one built for photo editing can look identical on paper in some ways and be completely wrong for the other person's needs. Here's what to actually weigh based on what you're using it for.

Resolution: match it to size and distance, not just "higher is better"

Resolution (1080p, 1440p, 4K) determines how sharp text and images look, but its impact depends heavily on screen size and how far you sit from it. A 24-inch 1080p monitor at a normal desk distance looks reasonably sharp; stretch that same resolution over a 32-inch screen and text and icons look noticeably softer, since the same number of pixels is spread over more physical space. As a rough guide: 1080p suits screens up to about 24 inches, 1440p is a good match for 27-inch screens, and 4K is worth it on 27-32 inch screens or when you sit close enough to notice individual pixels at lower resolutions.

Refresh rate: matters a lot for some uses, barely at all for others

Refresh rate (60Hz, 144Hz, 240Hz+) is how many times per second the image updates. For general productivity, web browsing, and office work, 60Hz is genuinely fine — the difference is hard to notice outside of fast motion. For gaming, especially competitive or fast-paced titles, a higher refresh rate (144Hz or more) produces noticeably smoother motion and can be a real advantage. If you're buying a monitor purely for spreadsheets, documents, and video calls, refresh rate is one of the specs safest to deprioritize in favor of resolution or panel quality.

Panel type: the difference in color, viewing angle, and contrast

For color-sensitive work (photo editing, design), IPS is worth prioritizing over refresh rate or price. For general office and browsing use, any of the three will look fine to most people.

Size and desk distance: bigger isn't always better

A monitor that's too large for your desk distance forces you to move your head to see the edges, which causes more strain than it solves. As a general guide, 24-27 inches suits most single-monitor desks at typical sitting distance; ultrawide or 32-inch-plus monitors work best when you sit further back or plan to use them for multitasking with several windows open side by side.

Ports and connectivity worth checking before buying

Eye comfort features worth having, regardless of use case

Flicker-free backlighting and a blue-light reduction mode are worth having on any monitor you'll look at for hours a day, since they're low-cost features that don't trade off against anything else — unlike refresh rate or resolution, there's little reason to skip them.

Buy based on your actual daily use, not the highest number on the spec sheet. A 144Hz TN gaming monitor is the wrong choice for photo editing, and a color-accurate 60Hz IPS panel is the wrong choice for competitive gaming — matching the panel type and refresh rate to what you'll actually do matters more than maximizing any single spec.
