External drive shopping pages are full of specs that don't matter to most buyers and missing the ones that do. Here's what actually affects your experience, in order of importance.
HDD or SSD: the real tradeoff
Hard disk drives (HDDs) use spinning platters and are cheaper per gigabyte, making them the better choice for large, infrequently-accessed backups — a full photo archive you rarely open, for instance. Solid-state drives (SSDs) have no moving parts, are faster, quieter, and more durable against drops, but cost noticeably more per gigabyte. If you're backing up and rarely touching the files, an HDD saves money. If you're actively working off the drive — editing video, running applications from it — an SSD is worth the premium.
The spec that matters more than storage size: the interface
A drive's maximum speed is capped by its connection type, not just what's inside it:
- USB 3.0 / 3.2 Gen 1 — around 5 Gbps theoretical max, fine for HDDs and casual use.
- USB 3.2 Gen 2 — around 10 Gbps, worth seeking out if you're pairing it with an SSD.
- USB4 / Thunderbolt — 20-40 Gbps, only relevant for high-end SSDs and demanding work like 4K/8K video editing.
Pairing a fast SSD with an old USB 3.0 port wastes most of the SSD's speed — check what ports your laptop actually has before paying for a drive faster than your port can use.
How much storage do you actually need?
Work backward from what you're storing, not a round number that sounds safe:
- A typical photo library (tens of thousands of photos) — 1-2TB is usually generous headroom.
- A full laptop backup, including installed apps — match or exceed your laptop's internal storage.
- Video footage — this fills drives fast; 4K footage can use several GB per minute, so budget accordingly if this is a regular habit.
Durability features worth paying for — and ones that usually aren't
If the drive travels with you regularly, shock-resistant casing and a solid-state design (no moving parts) meaningfully reduce failure risk from drops. Water resistance ratings are nice but rarely the deciding factor for a desk-bound backup drive — pay for that if you're using it outdoors or on job sites, skip it otherwise.
Portable vs. desktop drives
Portable drives are bus-powered (no separate power cable, draw power from the USB port) and typically top out around 4-5TB. Desktop external drives need their own power cable but go up to much higher capacities and can run cooler under sustained heavy use. For most home users, a portable drive covers the need; desktop drives make sense mainly for large media libraries or multi-drive backup setups.
A simple way to decide
- Rarely-accessed backup, budget-conscious → HDD, USB 3.0 is fine.
- Actively used, some budget for speed → SSD, USB 3.2 Gen 2.
- Professional video/photo work → SSD, USB4/Thunderbolt, size based on project volume.
- Travels with you often → prioritize a solid-state, shock-resistant portable drive.
