Dust buildup isn't just cosmetic. It clogs heatsinks and fan blades, which makes a computer run hotter, which makes fans spin faster and louder to compensate, and in bad cases forces the processor to slow itself down to avoid overheating. A machine that's gotten noticeably louder or slower over a year or two, with no software changes to explain it, is a common sign it's overdue for a clean.
What you actually need (and what to avoid)
- Compressed air (canned or a small electric duster) is the standard, safe tool for blowing dust out of vents, fans, and heatsinks without touching internal components.
- A soft brush helps loosen dust that's stuck rather than loose, before blowing it out.
- Avoid a household vacuum directly on internal components — vacuums can generate static electricity that risks damaging sensitive parts, and the suction can spin fan blades fast enough to damage the small motor. It's fine for the outside of the case or keyboard, not for pointing directly at exposed internals.
- Avoid cleaning while the computer is running or plugged in — power it down and unplug it first, both for safety and because spinning fans with power still connected can act like a small generator and send an unwanted current back through the motor.
Cleaning a desktop tower
Desktops are the more forgiving of the two to clean, since the case opens up and components are more accessible. Open the side panel, and using short bursts of compressed air, blow dust out of the power supply vents, case fans, CPU cooler fins, and graphics card. Hold fan blades still with a finger while blowing air through them so the force of the air doesn't spin them past their rated speed. Work from the top of the case downward so dislodged dust falls out rather than resettling on cleaned components. Doing this every 6-12 months, more often in a dusty or pet-heavy home, keeps buildup from becoming a real airflow problem.
Cleaning a laptop: more caution required
Laptops pack components more tightly and aren't designed to be opened as casually. Start with what's accessible from the outside: use compressed air on the vents (usually on the sides or underneath) while the laptop is off, in short bursts, to dislodge dust without needing to open the case. Many laptops also let you remove the bottom panel with a small screwdriver to access the fan and heatsink directly, which gives a much more effective clean than vents alone — check whether your specific model's bottom panel is user-accessible before attempting it, since some are, some void a warranty, and some are effectively sealed. If you're not comfortable opening it, an external vent-and-keyboard cleaning is still worth doing regularly and captures most of the benefit.
Signs it's overdue
