Keyboards and mice get marketed on numbers that sound impressive but rarely change how they feel in your hand: polling rates in the thousands, RGB zones, "gaming-grade" sensors. Meanwhile the things that actually determine whether you'll enjoy typing on something for eight hours a day — switch feel, layout, and wrist position — barely make it onto the box. Here's what to actually weigh.

Switch type decides how typing feels more than anything else

Membrane keyboards (the flat, quiet kind bundled with most prebuilt desktops) use a rubber dome under each key and need to be pressed most of the way down before they register. They're cheap and quiet but feel mushy after using anything else. Mechanical keyboards use individual physical switches under each key, and the switch type changes the feel entirely:

If you can, try a few switch types in person before buying — the difference matters more to daily comfort than any other spec on this list, and preference here is genuinely personal.

Wireless vs. wired: the latency concern is mostly solved

A few years ago, wireless meant a real, noticeable input lag compared to wired. Modern wireless keyboards and mice using a dedicated USB receiver (not Bluetooth) have closed that gap enough that it's a non-issue for everything except competitive gaming at a high level. Bluetooth connections add a bit more latency than a dedicated receiver and can occasionally have reconnection quirks, so a USB receiver is the safer choice if you're picky about responsiveness. Battery life on a decent wireless mouse now commonly runs weeks to months per charge, so "wireless means constant charging" is mostly outdated as a concern.

Mouse sensor and DPI: higher isn't better past a point

DPI (dots per inch) controls how far the cursor moves per inch of physical mouse movement. Marketing pushes DPI numbers as high as 20,000+, but almost nobody uses anywhere near that — most people land somewhere between 800 and 1600 DPI as comfortable, with higher numbers mainly useful for very high-resolution multi-monitor setups where the cursor needs to cover more physical screen distance per inch of hand movement. A mediocre sensor at a sensible DPI tracks more accurately than an excellent sensor cranked to a DPI you don't need. The sensor's actual tracking accuracy and consistency matters far more than the maximum DPI it's capable of.

Ergonomics: the spec that pays off the most over time

Wrist and hand strain builds up slowly, which is exactly why it's easy to under-prioritize when buying. A few things worth checking regardless of budget:

Programmable buttons and software: useful for some, clutter for others

Extra mouse buttons and programmable keys are genuinely useful if you have specific repeated actions — copy/paste, switching apps, macros for a game or workflow. If you don't have a clear use in mind for them, they're not worth paying extra for, and the companion software some brands require can be more hassle (background processes, forced accounts) than the buttons are worth. Buy programmability because you have a use for it, not because it's included.

The specs worth spending on are the ones you interact with directly and constantly: switch feel, mouse shape for your grip, and wireless reliability. The specs that sound most impressive on the box — extreme DPI, RGB lighting, ultra-high polling rate — matter the least for typical daily use, gaming aside.
