Most slow-Wi-Fi advice starts with a product recommendation. That's backwards — a new router won't help if your real problem is interference, an overloaded band, or your internet plan itself. The fix is to find out which of those you actually have, which takes about fifteen minutes and no purchases.

Step 1: Separate "slow internet" from "slow Wi-Fi"

Connect a laptop directly to your modem or router with an ethernet cable and run a speed test. Then run the same test over Wi-Fi, standing close to the router. If the wired result matches what you're paying for but the Wi-Fi result is far lower, the problem is local — your router, your walls, or interference. If the wired result is already low, call your ISP; no amount of router tuning fixes an underprovisioned connection.

Step 2: Check which band you're on

Most routers broadcast both a 2.4GHz and a 5GHz network. The 2.4GHz band reaches further through walls but is slower and shared with cordless phones, microwaves, and baby monitors. The 5GHz band is faster but drops off faster with distance and walls. If your devices default to 2.4GHz out of habit, you may be leaving speed on the table. On most phones and laptops, forget the 2.4GHz network in Wi-Fi settings and reconnect to the 5GHz one when you're near the router, then compare.

Step 3: Look for channel congestion

Wi-Fi channels are shared with every other network in range — apartment buildings are the worst case. A free Wi-Fi analyzer app (available for Android; on iPhone you'll need a laptop-based tool since Apple restricts this) shows how many networks are crowded onto the same channel as yours. If you're on a crowded channel, log into your router's admin page and switch to a less-used one, or set the channel to "Auto" if it isn't already.

Step 4: Deal with physical obstacles

Wi-Fi signal degrades through walls, especially concrete, brick, and anything with metal (mirrors, ductwork, appliances). If your router sits in a closet or behind a TV, moving it to an open, central, elevated spot — not on the floor, not inside a cabinet — often does more than any settings change. Router placement is unglamorous but usually the single biggest factor after your internet plan itself.

Step 5: Check for bandwidth hogs

A single device running large downloads, cloud backups, or 4K streaming can starve everything else on the network. Most router admin panels show connected devices and their usage — check for anything unexpected, including old devices you forgot were connected. If you can, pause or throttle background syncs during hours you need speed most.

If you've done all of the above and speeds are still poor, the honest next step is usually a mesh Wi-Fi system for a large or multi-floor home, or an ISP plan upgrade if your household routinely runs multiple 4K streams and video calls at once. Buy for your actual bottleneck, not the biggest number on the box.

When it's worth replacing your router

If your router is more than five or six years old, it may not support newer, more efficient Wi-Fi standards (look for "Wi-Fi 6" or "Wi-Fi 6E" support) that handle multiple devices better — this matters more in a household with many connected devices than raw top speed does. It's also worth checking whether your ISP still pushes firmware updates to it; unsupported hardware is both slower and a security risk.
