Mesh Wi-Fi systems have simplified home coverage, but they still involve choices that matter — which unit to buy, how to place them, and how to handle your old router. Most setup goes fine, but a few early decisions make a big difference in both speed and reliability.

When mesh actually makes sense

A mesh system isn't an automatic upgrade. If you live in a small apartment or a one-story home under 2,000 square feet and your current router reaches everything with acceptable speed, stick with what you have — it's simpler and cheaper. Mesh wins in multi-floor homes, homes larger than 2,500 square feet, or homes with lots of walls and dead zones. A single good router often beats a cheap mesh system, so don't buy just because you hear about Wi-Fi 6 — buy because you have a coverage problem.

The two types of mesh: which to buy

Most consumer mesh systems either use dedicated backhaul (a third frequency band to talk between nodes) or share frequencies with your devices. Dedicated backhaul (TP-Link BE19000, Netgear Orbi Pro) is faster and less congested — better for large homes and multiple heavy users. Shared backhaul (Eero, Linksys Velop) is cheaper and takes up less physical space. For most homes, shared backhaul is fine; the difference only matters if you're running large file transfers between nodes constantly.

How many nodes do you actually need?

Buy only as many as you need. Most people oversized their system: a two-node mesh covers most medium homes. Add a third node only if you have dead zones after placing two nodes optimally, or if your home is over 4,000 square feet. Extra nodes add cost, use power, and create more potential connection points for devices to get confused between. Start with two and add later if needed.

Placement: the rule that actually works

The main router should go in the center of your home, elevated and open (not in a closet). The second node should go roughly halfway between the router and your furthest dead zone — not right next to the first node (they won't help each other) and not so far away that it gets a weak signal from the main unit (it'll relay a weak signal back). Run a speed test on the second node after placing it; if it's getting less than half the speed of the main router, move it closer to the main unit. If speeds look good, you're done.

Before you plug it in: what to do with your old router

Turn it off completely and unplug it before turning on the mesh system. Old routers in "access point mode" sometimes confuse the mesh system's band steering — devices default to the old one instead of the new mesh network. You can recycle or donate the router, or keep it boxed in storage as a backup (it won't hurt). The mesh system will create its own network name (SSID) — it's usually fine to use the same name you had before so devices reconnect automatically.

Initial setup: the order that matters

Install the app first, create a new account, then plug in the main node. Let it boot fully (usually two to three minutes). Then add the satellite nodes one at a time, waiting two minutes between adding each one. The app will handle channel selection and frequency assignments — almost all of this is automatic now and better left alone. The biggest mistake is trying to add multiple nodes at once; the system gets confused about which one is which.

After setup: three things to check

Once all nodes are online, run a speed test at each location, especially near the satellite nodes. You should see at least 70 percent of your wired internet speed — if you're getting 30 Mbps and paying for 100 Mbps, something's wrong. Check your connected devices list in the app and make sure everything that matters is on the 5GHz band (you'll usually need to forget the 2.4GHz network in your device settings to force this). Finally, disable "access point mode" if the app mentions it; you want the mesh to manage everything.

Most mesh systems slow down slightly as more devices connect to satellite nodes. This is normal. If one node becomes a bottleneck, the mesh software redistributes clients automatically — don't try to manage this manually.

When to update firmware

Check the app for firmware updates monthly. Most updates are stability and security fixes — apply them immediately. Your mesh system should do this automatically, but some older models require you to initiate it. If you're tempted to skip an update "because it's working fine," don't — these systems are network hardware and security matters more than you might think.
