A guest network lets visitors connect to your Wi-Fi without giving them access to your personal files, printers, or connected devices. Most modern routers support this, and it takes just a few minutes. The right settings isolate guests while keeping them happy.
Why you need a guest network
Sharing your main Wi-Fi password means visitors can theoretically see your computer's files if your network sharing is enabled, or connect to any printer or smart home device. A guest network puts their traffic on a separate connection — they can browse the web and use their own apps, but they can't reach your internal network. You also get a separate password you can change frequently without affecting all your personal devices.
Enable guest mode in your router
Log into your router's admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1 or check the sticker on the back). Look for "Guest Network," "Guest Wi-Fi," or "Guest Access" — location varies by manufacturer. Usually it's under a "Wireless" or "Network" section. Click the option to enable it. You should see a toggle or a checkbox marked "Enable Guest Network."
Name it something simple and memorable
The guest network needs its own name (SSID), separate from your main network. Use something clear like "Guest" or "YourName-Guest" — avoid long names with special characters, since you'll be dictating this to visitors verbally and typing it into phones. Two or three words is ideal. You can keep the same network name on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz (most routers handle this automatically).
Use a strong password, but not the same one you remember
Create a guest password that's at least 12 characters with a mix of letters and numbers. It doesn't need to be memorable for you — write it down or save it in your router admin panel (most can display it easily). Change this password every few months or after a visitor moves out, without touching your main network password. This way, you never have to change all your personal passwords because the guest network got compromised.
Isolation and bandwidth limits
Most routers have an option called "Isolation" or "AP Isolation" on the guest network. Make sure this is turned ON — it prevents guests from seeing each other's devices or accessing your printer. Some routers also let you set bandwidth limits per guest or per device, which prevents one visitor's large download from choking everyone else. Set a speed cap if you're on a connection you share (like an apartment). A typical cap is "limit each guest device to 5 Mbps download" — still plenty for browsing but won't sink your whole connection if someone runs a backup.
Disable these features on the guest network
Make sure "UPnP" is disabled on guest Wi-Fi (it lets devices automatically open ports, which is a security risk). If your router shows "Broadcast Network Name," leave it ON — guests need to see the network name to connect. Turn off "WPS" (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) on the guest network if the option appears — it's less secure than a password. Most modern routers have these set correctly by default, but it's worth checking.
Test it with your own phone
Before inviting guests, forget your main network on your phone and connect to the guest network to test it. You should be able to browse the web normally. Then try to access your computer or printer by name — it should fail quietly, not show them in a list. If you can reach your devices on the guest network, go back to the router settings and confirm AP Isolation is turned ON.
Turning it off when you don't need it
If you rarely have visitors, you can disable the guest network entirely when not in use — it reduces the number of networks broadcasting and takes up slightly less router resources. Re-enable it when friends are coming over. The settings usually stay saved, so the password and configuration return when you turn it back on.
If guests still can't connect
Make sure the guest network is broadcast on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz if your router supports it (usually a checkbox for each band). Older devices may only see 2.4GHz, so having both available prevents the "I can see it but can't connect" problem. If that's enabled and guests still struggle, ask them to "forget" the network from their device settings and re-join — sometimes cached old attempts cause connection issues. Finally, check if your router shows the guest network actually connected — look at the admin panel's client list or status page and confirm the guest network has "X clients connected."
