"Vampire power" — electricity drawn by devices that are plugged in but not actively in use — is real, but it's also frequently overstated. Some always-on devices barely register on your bill; a few genuinely add up. Here's how to tell the difference instead of guessing.
Why this happens
Many devices draw a small amount of power even when switched "off," to keep a clock running, stay ready for a remote control signal, maintain a network connection, or keep an internal charging circuit active. Individually, most of these draws are small — often 1-5 watts — but a house with dozens of always-plugged-in devices can add them up to a real, if modest, amount over a full year.
What actually draws meaningful standby power
- Game consoles left in "instant-on" or rest mode to allow quick startup or background downloads — this is one of the larger and most commonly cited standby draws in a typical home, sometimes drawing significantly more than a simple full power-off.
- Older cable or satellite TV boxes, many of which are designed to stay nearly fully powered even when the TV is off, since they're maintaining a program guide and recording schedule.
- Desktop computers left on or in sleep mode continuously, particularly older ones, versus being fully shut down.
- Chargers left plugged in with nothing connected draw a very small amount, but it's close to negligible on modern chargers — this one is more overstated online than it is in practice.
- Large always-on networking or media equipment, like a home server, NAS, or older router, which are designed to run continuously and can add up over a full year even at modest wattage.
How to actually measure it yourself
Rather than guessing, a plug-in power meter (sometimes called a "kill-a-watt" style meter) is inexpensive and tells you exactly what a device draws, both in active use and standby. Plug the meter between the wall outlet and the device, let it sit in standby for a few minutes, and read the wattage — this turns a vague suspicion about "vampire power" into a specific number you can actually judge as worth addressing or not.
Where to focus, based on what typically matters
- Change console power settings from "instant-on" to a full power-down mode if you're not relying on background downloads or quick resume — this is usually the single biggest standby-power change available in an average home.
- Use a switched power strip for infrequently used equipment — printers, game consoles you don't use daily, or a home theater system — so you can cut all standby draw at once rather than unplugging each device individually.
- Don't bother chasing phone charger and small-electronics standby draw — modern chargers draw a small enough amount that unplugging them for "savings" makes little practical difference, especially compared to the console and set-top-box categories above.
- Check your always-on networking gear's wattage if you're curious, but recognize that most of it needs to stay on for your internet and smart-home devices to function, so this is more about knowing the number than necessarily changing anything.
