Battery advice online is full of half-remembered myths from a decade ago. Modern lithium-ion batteries behave differently than older ones, so some of what your parents told you no longer applies. Here's what actually moves the needle today.

The biggest single factor: screen brightness

Display brightness is typically the single largest drain on a laptop battery. Dropping from maximum to around 60-70% brightness, or letting auto-brightness handle it, is usually the single most effective change you can make — bigger than any background-app setting.

Every open browser tab and background app uses some processing power, and a handful of tabs playing video or auto-refreshing content adds up. Check your battery usage breakdown (Settings → Battery on Windows, or Activity Monitor's Energy tab on Mac) to spot anything using disproportionate power, rather than guessing.

Keeping Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on uses a small, steady trickle of power even when idle. It's not a major factor on its own, but turning off Bluetooth when you're not using wireless peripherals is a small, free win with no downside.

Heat is the real long-term enemy of battery health, more than charging habits. Using a laptop on a soft surface that blocks vents, or in direct sun, raises internal temperature and accelerates battery wear over time. A hard, ventilated surface matters more for long-term battery health than any charging routine.

If your battery life has dropped noticeably over a year or two of normal use, that's expected aging, not necessarily a defect — most laptop batteries are rated for a few hundred to around a thousand charge cycles before capacity noticeably declines. Your operating system's battery health report (Settings → Battery on most systems) will show current capacity versus original.
