Battery advice online is full of half-remembered myths from a decade ago. Modern lithium-ion batteries behave differently than older ones, so some of what your parents told you no longer applies. Here's what actually moves the needle today.
The biggest single factor: screen brightness
Display brightness is typically the single largest drain on a laptop battery. Dropping from maximum to around 60-70% brightness, or letting auto-brightness handle it, is usually the single most effective change you can make — bigger than any background-app setting.
Background apps and browser tabs
Every open browser tab and background app uses some processing power, and a handful of tabs playing video or auto-refreshing content adds up. Check your battery usage breakdown (Settings → Battery on Windows, or Activity Monitor's Energy tab on Mac) to spot anything using disproportionate power, rather than guessing.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Keeping Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on uses a small, steady trickle of power even when idle. It's not a major factor on its own, but turning off Bluetooth when you're not using wireless peripherals is a small, free win with no downside.
Power settings that actually matter
- Windows: Settings → System → Power & Battery → Power Mode. Switching to "Best power efficiency" when you're not doing demanding work extends runtime meaningfully.
- macOS: Battery settings include a "Low Power Mode" toggle that reduces background activity and slightly caps performance in exchange for real battery gains.
Myths you can stop worrying about
- "You have to fully drain the battery before charging." This was true for older nickel-based batteries, not modern lithium-ion. Partial charges don't harm today's laptop batteries.
- "Leaving it plugged in all the time ruins the battery." Modern laptops manage charging intelligently and stop topping up at 100%. Some laptops (many recent MacBooks and ThinkPads) even offer an "optimized" or capped-charge setting for people who mostly work plugged in — worth enabling if you rarely run on battery.
- "Closing apps instead of minimizing always saves battery." Modern operating systems suspend inactive apps automatically; manually force-quitting everything usually saves very little and can slow down reopening them.
What actually shortens battery lifespan over years
Heat is the real long-term enemy of battery health, more than charging habits. Using a laptop on a soft surface that blocks vents, or in direct sun, raises internal temperature and accelerates battery wear over time. A hard, ventilated surface matters more for long-term battery health than any charging routine.
Quick wins in order of impact
- Lower screen brightness or use auto-brightness.
- Close unused tabs and background apps, especially anything playing video.
- Switch to a power-saving mode when not doing demanding work.
- Turn off Bluetooth when not in use.
- Keep the laptop on a hard, ventilated surface to manage heat.
