A power strip, a surge protector, and a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) look similar and get used interchangeably in conversation, but they protect against different things — and a plain power strip protects against almost nothing.
Plain power strip: just more outlets
A basic power strip is simply an extension of your outlets with no electrical protection built in. If it doesn't specifically say "surge protector" on the packaging or a joule rating somewhere in the specs, assume it offers no protection against power spikes at all — it's purely for convenience.
Surge protector: protects against spikes, not outages
A surge protector absorbs brief, excessive voltage spikes — from lightning strikes near power lines, or sudden grid fluctuations — that can otherwise damage or destroy connected electronics instantly. It does nothing for a power outage; if the power cuts out, everything plugged into a surge protector loses power immediately, just as if it were plugged into the wall directly.
Check the joule rating (higher means more protection capacity, generally look for at least 1,000+ joules for real electronics like computers) and know that surge protectors wear out — repeated smaller surges gradually use up their protective capacity even without an obvious single failure event, so a surge protector that's absorbed a major spike or is several years old may be offering less protection than its rating suggests.
UPS: protects against both spikes and outages
A UPS contains a battery and provides brief backup power the instant an outage occurs, giving you time to save work and shut down properly, or in some cases keep running through a short outage entirely. Most UPS units also include surge protection, so they cover both scenarios a plain surge protector or power strip don't.
Sizing matters: a UPS is rated in VA (volt-amps) or watts, and you need enough capacity to run your connected equipment for your desired backup time — check your devices' power draw against the UPS rating rather than assuming any UPS will give you the runtime you expect.
Where each one actually makes sense
- Plain power strip: low-value devices where a surge would be a minor annoyance, not a real loss — a lamp, a phone charger you don't mind replacing.
- Surge protector: most everyday electronics — TVs, game consoles, standard desktop setups — where spike protection matters but sudden power loss isn't catastrophic.
- UPS: anything where a sudden, unplanned shutdown causes real problems — a desktop computer with unsaved work, a home server or NAS, networking equipment you want to stay online through brief outages, or any setup involving spinning hard drives, which are more vulnerable to abrupt power loss than solid-state storage.
