Dead zones happen, but most people buy a mesh system before trying the free fixes. Router placement, frequency tweaks, and antenna positioning can often recover signal that you think is gone. The expensive gear comes second, not first.
First: confirm it's actually a dead zone
Open a Wi-Fi analyzer app on your phone (Android: WiFi Analyzer; iPhone needs a laptop-based tool or the app "Finder" built into newer Macs). Check what signal strength you're seeing in the weak spot — a number above -70dB is usually enough for email and web browsing, even if it looks bad. Below -80dB starts to feel noticeably slow. If you're at -90dB or worse, no amount of tweaking will help without hardware. Anything between -70 and -85 often improves with the fixes below.
The single biggest fix: move the router
Most people tuck the router in a closet or corner. Move it to the physical center of your home, at shoulder height or higher (not on the floor, not inside a cabinet). Walls, especially with metal inside (ducts, appliances, plumbing), absorb signal massively. One move can fix dead zones without any other changes. If you can't move it physically, reposition antennas — a mix of vertical and horizontal ones (not all parallel) spreads signal better in different directions.
Antenna adjustment: the forgotten fix
Most routers have adjustable antennas that stick out the back or sides. Orientation matters: one vertically and one or more horizontally spreads signal better than all pointing the same direction. If your router has multiple external antennas, experiment with different combinations — vertical on primary antenna, horizontal on secondary, and so on. This costs nothing and sometimes dramatically improves reach in one direction. Many people think their "bad antenna" is broken when it just needs rotating.
Clear the line of sight to the dead zone
Large metal objects between the router and the weak spot absorb signal. A microwave oven, filing cabinet full of metal, large mirror, or aquarium can all create dead zones. If you can't move these objects, moving the router slightly can often get signal past the obstruction around a corner instead of through it. Even a foot in a different direction sometimes matters.
Switch to or add the 2.4GHz band
The 5GHz band is faster but doesn't reach as far. If your dead zone is far from the router and you're on 5GHz only, it simply can't reach. Make sure the 2.4GHz network is also broadcast (go to your router settings and look for "Enable 2.4GHz" or similar). Devices will default to 2.4GHz if it's the stronger signal, which is fine for that spot — give up some speed for coverage that works. If you're already broadcasting both, this isn't the problem.
Reduce interference on the crowded band
2.4GHz is shared with microwaves, baby monitors, and cordless phones. Check if anything is actively using that band when you test. Microwave ovens are the worst — run one nearby and your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi gets noticeably worse temporarily. Try running your dead zone test at a different time of day when fewer nearby networks and devices are active. If you always get bad signal at the same time, interference, not distance, is probably the problem. Move the router away from microwave, cordless phone base stations, and thick walls with plumbing.
Try a different Wi-Fi channel
Your router automatically picks a channel, but it sometimes picks one that's congested. Run a Wi-Fi analyzer app and look at what channels nearby networks use. If you're on channel 6 and there are five other networks on channels 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, switch to channel 1 or 11 (the non-overlapping ones). Channels 1, 6, and 11 are the non-overlapping safe choices on 2.4GHz. Log into your router settings, find the channel selection (usually under "Wireless" settings), and manually pick an empty one. Wait a few minutes for devices to reconnect and re-test.
Enable TX power adjustment (if available)
Some routers have a "TX power" or "transmit power" setting that lets you boost output. It's usually at 100 percent already, but if you see an option to increase it, try it. Note that increasing power doesn't help if walls are the problem — transmit power can't get through concrete any better, but it can reach slightly further through open space and thin drywall.
When to stop troubleshooting and buy hardware
If the dead zone is more than one floor away, or your home is over 3,000 square feet, or more than 60 feet from the router and separated by multiple walls, no antenna adjustment will fix it — a mesh system or Wi-Fi extender is the practical next step. But most dead zones are caused by placement and interference, not actual distance, so try the free fixes first.
