Every lithium-ion battery degrades a little with every charge cycle — that part is unavoidable chemistry, not a design flaw. But how much it degrades over a couple of years depends a lot on daily habits. Here's what actually shortens battery lifespan, and what's just internet folklore.
What actually causes degradation
Lithium-ion batteries wear out through two main mechanisms: chemical stress from being kept at very high or very low charge for long periods, and heat. Every charge-discharge cycle causes tiny, permanent changes inside the battery's chemistry, and both extreme charge levels and high temperatures accelerate that process. This is why a battery that's two years old holds noticeably less charge than it did new, even with normal use.
Habits that make a real difference
- Avoid sitting at 100% for extended periods. Keeping a battery fully charged and plugged in for hours (like charging overnight every night) holds it at a high-stress voltage longer than necessary. Many laptops and phones now offer an "optimized charging" or charge-limit setting that caps charging around 80-90% for this exact reason — turn it on if your device has it.
- Avoid letting it sit at 0% for long stretches. Deep discharges are also stressful on the battery, and a device left fully drained for weeks (like in storage) can degrade faster or, in rare cases, fail to hold charge at all.
- Keep it cool. Heat is one of the fastest ways to age a battery. Don't leave a phone in direct sun or a hot car, and avoid charging a laptop while it's under heavy load buried in a bag, where heat has nowhere to go.
- Use the charger that came with the device, or one that matches its specification. Modern devices negotiate charging speed with the charger and won't accept unsafe power, but very cheap or mismatched chargers can still charge less efficiently or generate more heat than a proper one.
- For long-term storage, charge to roughly 50% first. If you're storing a laptop, phone, or spare battery for months, storing it around a half charge rather than full or empty minimizes stress during the storage period.
Myths you can stop worrying about
- "You have to fully drain a battery before recharging." This was true for older nickel-based batteries, not modern lithium-ion. Partial charges throughout the day are fine and don't create "memory effect."
- "Charging overnight ruins the battery." Modern devices stop drawing full current once they hit 100% and trickle-charge only as needed, so this alone isn't especially harmful — the bigger factor is how long the device then sits at 100% in a warm environment, like under a pillow.
- "Fast charging always damages the battery faster." Fast charging does generate more heat, which is the actual factor that matters, but modern fast-charging systems manage this with active thermal controls. Occasional fast charging is not a significant problem; charging fast in a hot environment repeatedly is more the issue.
- "You need to close all apps to save battery." Modern operating systems suspend background apps efficiently on their own; manually force-closing everything can actually cost more battery by making apps reload from scratch each time you reopen them.
How to check your current battery health
Most laptops and phones expose a battery health or maximum-capacity figure in their settings (on iPhone, under Battery Health; on Windows, via a battery report command; on Mac, under Battery settings). This tells you how much of the original capacity remains, which is a more useful number to track over time than runtime alone, since runtime is also affected by screen brightness and what you're running.
