"My computer is slow" almost always turns out to be one of a handful of specific, fixable causes — not a sign the machine is simply old. Here's the order to check them in, starting with the ones that take two minutes and are most often the actual culprit.
Step 1: Check what's actually using resources
Open Task Manager on Windows (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) or Activity Monitor on Mac (search Spotlight for it), sort by CPU and then by memory, and see what's sitting at the top. It's common to find a browser with forty tabs, a sync client, or a background updater quietly eating resources you didn't know were gone. This single check identifies the cause more often than any other step here.
Step 2: Trim your startup programs
Every app that offers to "launch at startup" adds to the time your computer takes to become usable, and many keep running in the background afterward. On Windows, check the Startup tab in Task Manager; on Mac, check Login Items in System Settings. Disable anything you don't need running constantly — you can always open it manually when you actually want it.
Step 3: Check your storage headroom
Both Windows and macOS slow down noticeably once a drive gets close to full, because the system loses room to manage temporary files and virtual memory. Operating system updates sometimes include performance and driver fixes, particularly for graphics and storage drivers. If you've been postponing updates for months, that lag can itself be a cause of subtle slowdowns and compatibility issues — worth clearing before deciding hardware is the problem.
When it actually is the hardware
If you've cleared background processes, freed up storage, confirmed no malware, and you're still waiting on everyday tasks like opening a browser or a document, and the machine is more than six or seven years old with under 8GB of memory or a spinning hard drive, that's a legitimate case for an upgrade — either more memory, a swap to an SSD, or a new machine, in roughly that order of cost-effectiveness.
A quick troubleshooting order
